    • One carat is the size people mean when they picture a solitaire stud. At around 6.5mm it reads clearly from across a table without becoming something you have to think about wearing.

The metal is vermeil, which is worth explaining because most people have only heard "plated." Vermeil means a solid 925 sterling silver base with a substantial layer of real gold bonded over it — a proper thickness, not a flash coating. Underneath the gold is sterling, not brass, which is why vermeil doesn't turn skin green and suits most people with metal sensitivities. It's the highest grade of gold-over-silver there is.

The setting uses six prongs rather than the usual four. Six spreads the holding pressure evenly around the stone's girdle, which holds more securely under everyday knocks and means no single prong is carrying the stone alone.

The stone is a round brilliant — 57 facets, the most refined cut in jewellery and the one engineered to return the most light. In Aurora Moissanite, with 0.104 dispersion and a refractive index of 2.648–2.691, that comes back as visible colour rather than plain white sparkle.

Honest materials, properly set, at a price that makes sense
